What Manifold

Hi all i have just bought a mk1 1.8 GTI at the weekend to go with the convertiable but the GTI is missing the Exhaust manifold, i have been told that there are different types and mk2 1.8 GTI are different, is this true because i am desperate to get it running.

Whole car or just engine??? I'm guessing, just an engine. What year and bodystyle, they have different manifolds according to a year split approx 1983-1984.

Do you mean to install into? Hasn't the convertible already got an engine??? And what model and year, ie clipper, GTI, GL, GLS, etc etc

Yep, just counting the big block engines there's at least 4 different types, which vary according to year/model. Basically pre- or post approx 1983-1984; and either GTI or non-GTI.

Mk2 exhaust is irrelivent, unless you sourced a replacement engine from a Mk2, in which case you'd need to know to remove and throw away the Mk2 manifold. It doesn't fit the Mk1.

So all it needs is a manifold? Get the manifold for the Mk1 GTI 1983.

To be sure, look at the downpipe, is it a 6 bolt fitting or a C Clamp fitting - that's the difference.

Also, the GTI system (all of it, including the manifold) is very slightly bigger diameter, so a non-GTI won't do.

Sorry downpipe is gone to. So is there any difference between 1.6 gti and 1.8 gti manifold?

There are 2 variations of 1.8 GTI manifold.....6 bolt flange, or C clip fitting flange. The 6 bolt was earlier, and is the same as the 1.6 GTI manifold.
