What engine do i have?

so ive got the engine out of my car and its definitialy a 2.0 8v but im not sure exactly which one and what it came from.

im ordering several new parts and need to know what car they should be listed for (gaskets, seals, etc…)

im assuming its the 2E from a mk3 golf gti but im not 100% so ive turned to the pros.

16v that. On the front top right corner should be a number on a square and presuming in that will be '9a'

if you are refering to the part i have circled…



it says '18A'

on mine it was on the bit to the left of that, it looks like the no may have been destroyed. its the first 2 of the long engine no thats individual to the car it was from.

cant see anything, although i think the engine has previously been painted

i expect someone didnt want the engine to be traced back and destroyed the no.

its not a 3a if that helps narrow it down.

is there a cast date stamp on it.

 is that a round plug for the front as some have the breather here and some vent out the rocker. also i think there is a difference in height in some 2.0 blocks so you may be able to measure it

that isnt a 16v, timing belt is too narrow. if it doesnt have a hole for a crank sensor its a 3a or 2e type block, exactly which will be hard to find out without measuring the block height.

im leaning towards 2e since it has the mk3 type oil filter housing (look at top bolt, its shifted to the left compared to mk1/2 type)

if it does have a crank sensor hole then its an agg or ady, the crank sensor is right down the bottom of the block next to the gearbox end. i can see a casting mark there but cant quite make out if there is actually a hole

i think the 3a is more bulgy, is the 93 on the block the year
