What does a car with performance cam idle like ?

Hi Everyone,

You may remember a thread I started a while ago asking for help to sort out my rough idling 1.6 GTI engine. Anyway alot of hours and expense later and alot of issues have been fixed by both myself and a couple of garages but the idle issues remain.

One of the garages think my car may have a performance cam fitted -Before I bought the car it had had some head work done and I wonder if they have fitted an incorrect or performance cam ? one of the issues found was that the muppets had set the valve gaps miles out, these have been sorted and the car runs very well when driving but at idle it sounds like its hunting badly. does this sound normal for a car with a performance cam ?

How easy is it to tell if my cam is stock once I remove the rocker cover ?

i ave the exact same thing mate on a brand new engine well its done 9k mine is a 1982 1.6 gti could this be common with this engine. its only on idle isnt it mine sits jsut below 1000rpm and sounds like its ever so slightly hunting

Lumpy  

lumpy idle with sporty cam   , whith a constant whistle if you have a super charger, get some well funny looks from pedestrians when im sat at traffic lights.

I had a Judson supercharger on one of my bugs, that was pretty noisy  

Thanks all for the replies, so the consensus is lumpy idle, so how do I check that I have a non stock cam ? I wondered if my car had a 1.8GTI cam on it, is that different to a 1.6 cam ?
