Weak starter motor?
Can you get a weak starter motor?
I have been trying to start my golf today for the first time in 5 years!
But it turns over very slowly, as if the battery is almost flat.
So I fitted the battery from my daily driver and the golf was still the same.
The battery in question also started my daily no problem.
So it's not the battery.
As the car has not run for such a long time I was thinking the engine may well be stiff, but with all the plugs removed, thus no compression. It turns over like a good'un!
So can a starter motor become weak, it works but struggles to beat the engines compression?
ps, the starter goes to earth through the engine/gearbox I assume, but bad earth poss?
Any help, I am chomping at the bit to get this thing running
Thanks

So does it earth through the engine/gearbox etc…….
Or have I missed a earth connection, the earth from the nearside gear box mount to the chassis is sound.

thought it had it's own earth but could be wrong.
clean the contacts.
if it's turning the engine over with no compression it's not dead completly.

Hi
Yes starters can go lazy, the brushes in the starter could be quite worn now thus not allowing the power needed to turn the engine over with the plugs in but it will do when the plugs are out as there is no compression. Really you need to take it off and get it reconned or at least have it checked over.
Hope this helps
