If there is no sign of losing water externally then it could be your head gasket has gone and the water is ending up in your engine. Check your engine oil hasn't been turned into mayonaise by looking at the dipstick and the rocker cap.

if your losing that amount of water then you would have filled the sump by now.
with the heater on full hot it should constantly deliver hot air, if it doesnt the head gasket needs looking at.
First of all though you should check the pressure of the expansion tank cap. if you dont have a tester replace it with a new one.

Lookin at your initial repairs for overheating it would seem likely the head gasket has failed.

Do it once and do it right! ok, we've identified the problem, lets not make it worse by guessing……… Identifying the sympton is not the same as understanding the cause :)

bully 85 -  i had the very same simptoms with my 1.8 8v carb engine in my clipper cab.

My thermostat went, and although my temp needle didnt go over half the water boiled and poped the cap of me expansion tank :-(

after that i was loosing water, changed thermostat and expansion tank cap but was still going through alot of water, it does sound like headgasket mate, mines in being pressure tested skimmed and re fitted now.

You're losing roughly the same as I was when my head gasket went a few weeks ago. Water was leaking into No1 and sometimes on starting it would lock up with the hydraulic effect of the water in the cylinder, also clouds of steam on a cold day. Take the plugs out before you start in the morning and see if there's any water in the cylinders. I've got a good head as a spare but the existing looked okay when I took it off, I just cleaned it all up and put it back with a new gasket and bolts from Europarts, (free postage at the moment), its fine. Cost about £30.
