water pump variations?

hi folks, i'm new here so be nice to me!!!!!

my x reg (2 owners and very lovely) 1.6 gti had a 1.8 fitted a few years back. This weekend I fitted a new water pump; all fitted lovely but when I came to fit the pulley i found the flange on the new one is a smaller dia.& the 3 bolt holes have a smaller pcd. I've got a feeling I've fitted a later one for cars that have a heavier and balanced crankshaft pulley but I'm not sure. Obviously Euro Car parts aren't going to take it back now. can anyone clarify the the 2 types and advise me best course of action,etc.. thanks.

Hi,i am pretty shure that there is a 30 and 32mm flange for the pumps,i have fitted loads and have only ever seen the one size,another way out is to change the pulley.
