water pump squealing 1.8 8v gti 1990

Hi everyone,

My water pump is sqealing, but belt seems to look reasonably healthy and quite well tensioned, shall I just live with it or change it, it's relatively easy to change, just thought if its not losing water or overheating, might not be worth spending the money on quite yet, can you oil up the part that turns to dampen the noise, or is it best to just change ot for the sake of 30 odd quid? bear in mind it has been stood for 5 months and only just started, so could die down couldnt it?

Cheers

Matt

If its defo your water pump thats squealing, then it sounds like the bearing is on its way out, in the short term spray as close to the bearing as possible with WD40.

However if it has been making alot of noise for a while you better get ready to change it, as the bearing could fail at any time, worst case scenario is that your bearing will disintegrate and cause your car to over heat and all the problems that come with it.

I wouldn't go on any long journeys till you have replaced your pump.
