Water pump leak

Water pump leak

Noticed this morning water is dripping from the underside of the water pump housing on my Campaign. I'm guessing (hoping ??? 8O ) it just needs a new gasket.

Anyone got any thoughts on this or will it mean new water pump?

I can try gasket first as cheap! Anyone know if it should be the 7 hole or 8 hole type. Don't think I can see without stripping alternator belt, pulley etc down first

Every time I've seen this in the past on other Mk1's it's been the actual pump itself…they also start making a noise after a while as well.

When we bought the Gti there was a big puddle under the car (after running it a bit). Knocked another ?100 off the price - still using the same water pump after 3 years !!!! It just stopped leaking, so maybe (?) yours will do tghe same?

If I remember correctly exchange water pumps are not too expensive from GSF ?? You'll need the new gasket anyway, so my thoughts are that the whole job should be done once….if the gasket does not cure it you will need ANOTHER gasket and do the job again……if you see what I mean.

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

TIP: When fitting a new water pump to the housing, use stainless-steel bolts (look up "Fasteners" in the Yellow Pages) - if you break off even one bolt when opening them in the future, it's time for a new housing…

The ?22.50 model is for the 1.6 GTI (shown as >7/81), but I don't recall a difference between 1.6 & 1.8 water pumps, however the 1.8 one (8/81 > ?19.00) has a different part number and price, so I'd ask them first…

Hairy

If you give them the VW PN 037 121 010 B, GSF have the ability to find their PN equivalent. You could check it that way.

Well, as usual, hadn't had time to sort myself and it finally 'went' while I was away on business last week so local garage had to do it. Can't wait for that bill!!

i just replaced my pump with a new one from vag which is only a couple of quid more than the one from GSF. which is sold again on an exchange basis.
I see no point in replacing with less than original parts esspecially when so little in price and considering how many parts are no longer available we should get those that are.
I understand this may be a little late now though.

I agree with you - I always use VW parts if priced sensibly - bit of a relief your comments. Was worried about the bill coming incase they did use VW parts!
