Water Pump

Post

Hi all,

I had a problem with the bolts snapping off on my thermostat housing so ended up removing the water pump. Now the pump is off I am wondering if it is worthwhile replacing it with a new one ? I know on a modern golf this is a good idea when you change the cambelt. As far as I know it is the original pump and I have no problems. Is it a good idea to replace it or a waste of money ?

Car is a 1.8 GTI DX

Many Thanks,

BigMoose

No need to replace it if it sounds and feels OK, the only reason why newer cars change the water pump during a cambelt change is they are now run off the cambelt and while every thing is apart as that's not a easy job you may as well replace it as well.

With the older VW's the pump is run of the alternator belt and is so easy to get to.
I've still got my original VW fitted and it's still going after 275,000 miles and 28 years!

If you have removed the whole unit it's best to fit a new O ring which seals to the engine block, it's the same size O ring used for the thermostat. At 59 pence it's worth changing.
