Sounds like you are talking about the vacuum hose fitted to some warm-up regulators. As far as I am aware this was never standerd kit on a GTI. Have seen one fitted and it and vacuum hose connected to the side of the sensor-plate/air box.

I think you have an Audi item there - search the forum for more info on these, but it was quite a common mod to fit as the vacuum take off improves the performance slightly under acceleration I believe?

Yes - believe the vacuum advance allows the warm up reg to also work under hard accelaration to increase fuel pressure. Standard warm regs only do this on cold start.

apparently ahem…… as i have read and almost understood….

it senses from the vacuum that the car is under load and allows more fuel in a similar way to when it's cold…. or something like that in slightly less laymans terms

Directly above the dead centre of your valve cover  there is a plastic fitting in the breather hose. There should be a small hose running from this going under your air intake and through the bulkhead. Next to this there is a spare take off with perhaps a yellow cap on it, plug the hose from your regulator onto this and set the mixture. It could be that its fallen off this and if so the mixture will be lean.
