vw mk1 newb, engine setting up advice, mixture etc..

recent mk1 golf devotee here and loving it, my car has had the engine fully rebuilt new crank ,rebore +1mm,oversized pistons etc the full works really,it has done 400 miles since rebuild only done 49 miles since rebuild when i got it, the guy had done all the hard work but just stopped at the final hurdle, there are a lot of bits and bats of jobs to do i noticed a small watterleak near the thermostat, and i think the thermostat is stuck open as the car gets up to normal temperature when stationary but when driving the temp gauge goes right down into the cold , also the idle is quite high 1200 rpm when coldish and 1500 when hot, and when you blip the throttle instead of the needle going up and going straight back down to idle it goes down to 2200 rpm then slowly goes back down to idle , so i think the engine needs setting up right, the guy i got it off said he had home tune come and do it but i think he must not have been the best with leaving it with such a high idle for a start, it runs well but you can just feel its holding back a bit and not running at full chat sort of speak, i have taken it to the garage to get all these bits and bobs done is there any other advice you can offer re setting the engine up so its running right , also if the car has been rebored plus 1mm with +1mm oversized pistons what cc is it now its a 1.8 8v golf by the way, thanks in advance and sorry for the long drawn out post

welcome to the club!

Your engine cannot be too far out as it runs, sounds to me like a simple case of getting timing and fueling set up right.  If you haven't the tools or know how to do it yourself, you could do with finding a little independant garage that knows how to set up older cars - ie not somewhere that employs teenagers that just know how to plug cars into laptops!

thanks ross yes thats what i thought i just think it needs setting up right, the power between 3rd and 4th it just keeps picking almost feels like a turbo, i got on here whilst searching about for mk1 gti info and all the bits and bobs wrong with my car are echoed by lots of other mk1 owners , i am amazed at how nicely it drives with being a 28 year old car

New cubic capacity is:

(Old=1781cc.)

3.142(pi)  X rsquared(radius squared) X stroke X no of cylinders divided by 1000 to convert to cc.

3.142X (82mm bore/2=41mm squared =1681) X 86.4 X 4 =1825cc

So you have an extra 44 cc. :)
