unsolved over heating issue

Hi

My car is overheating - the fan does not kick in at all and water squirts out from the cap

i have changed the cap

 taken the thermostat out

tested the fan by wiring it directly to the battery -( fan itself does work)

water flows back to the tank - suggesting no block ?

im not sure what is wrong with it and why the high pressure build up and fan not turning  on

could it be the head gasket ?

would appreciate any direction on this one

Many thanks

Have you replaced the thermo swith.

Under pressure could be head gasket . Replace the fan switch first [the one in the radiator] then try again

thanks guys.

when the tempreture went half way - the water started to drip from the lid slowly . once it went past the light it wud  squeeze out all the water. ( usually within 10 min of goign warm)

however now i tried wiring the fan direct and constantly turning the fan on n off - no water loss when i keep the fan on and tempreture below half way. ( 20 min )

i will change the switch by the weekend and see what happens

I manage to replace the thermo switch -Still the car overheats and the fan does not come on.

i did a short wire on the plug which attaces to the switch - the fan turns on
so i cannot see any wiring fault - something is not allowing the thermo switch to turn on  ?

could it possibly be the radiator ? hot water not contacting the thermo switch surface ?

Hiya

Check the oil filler cap and dipstick for maypnnaise-like deposits - if you have these - it's definitely the head gasket. When it goes good and proper you'll find stuff a bit like margarine inside the coolant reservoir.

If not - check that the fan belt is tight enough. If it isn't, the water pump may not be spinning fast enought to push enough water through the system to trigger the radiator fan/thermostat.

PS - Replacing your own head gasket is possible, and a lot cheaper than going to a garage, but beware unforeseen complications like bolts shearing in the head  :? , the irresistible urge to "clean up the inlets a bit   , three wet weekends on the trot throwing your timetable to pot   , treading on one of the valve stem seals by accident so you have to order a new set  :x , and suppliers sending you the wrong bit  :banghead:

It only took me 12 months…..

water seems to be clean - and oil in the dipstick - clear as honey.
ive taken the thermostat out and running it without.

i cannot seem to get the thermo switch to kick in - ive unscrewed it from the radiator itself - got boiling water from the kettle put it in to a coke can slitting it from the top enough for the switch to sit in it - still no joy :(

You could be really unlucky and just bought a duff switch and thermostat, :dontknow:

PROBLEM SOLVED

although the radiator appeared to be ok to me - i changed the radiator and problem solved - now my tempreture sits slightly below middle - and middle. thermo switch works and fan turns on  now - i think the hot water was not circulating to that part of the rad.
