Advice needed

Hi does anybody know if you can turbo a 1.8 kr engine and what the power gain would be?

Dont fancy changing engine thats all

Thank you

You can but you would need to lower the compression to around 8:1 using special pistons or a double stacked/special gasket.

Do u know what the current compression would be about as it runs audi 90 1.9 pistons with a 16v head?

Standard was 10:1 on a kr
Are the Audi pistons the same height as the original VW ones ? Was a thicker gasget used? Was the head skimmed? All effect compression ratio.

Depending on how much boost you intend to run you can get away with standard compression, but it is lowered to allow more boost pressure without pinking and detonation.

Not to sure on head skimmed and different gasket as i havent read through the big box of docs i got with the car

Would a g60 supercharger fit? Or this depend on compression too?

If your going forced induction then you will need to lower the compression ration.

Ade (lhasadreams) is the man to sweet talk! his 16v supercharged beast is quite special!  bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Cheers Funk !!
Turbo or supercharger makes no difference they are really the same thing, one driven off exhaust gases and the other the crankshaft. G60 would fit if you get an integration kit, BBM In the US, there is a German and Aussie company that do them.
Really depends what you are trying to achieve and with what budget. 1.8T is the cheapest and easiest route to 200+ bhp but I wanted something rare and different and a bit more in keeping with the era of the car !!

I really want to keep my engine as i like the look and ease of working on it
Plus the parts are cheap to replace.

I am looking at options to gain more power in the future

N/a tuning then!

Look out for a tsr/gti engineering engine.

So far the engine as far as i know is a kr with the block bored out to take 1.9 audi 80 pistons but my dad seems to think it is a mk1 gti bored out to take audi 80 1.9 pistons with a 16v kr head on it

I just wouldnt mind knowing my options on tuning the engine

Does the block have a breather unit mounted on the front of it?

8V blocks do not have a breather on the front of them and there is no room for a breather from the head itself. Mine is an 8V Rallye block and I converted the mechanical fuel pump hole to act as a breather.

Tuning options depend on how much you want to spend and what power you are trying to achieve. There are diminishing returns.

You could get a wilder cam, but that will make the idle lumpy. You would need a vernier pulley to get the cam timing spot on.

You could put an Audi Throttle body and WUR on, this has a vacuum control to allow more fuel to be delivered momentarily when the throttle is opened rapidly. Also you can then get the control pressure spot on as there is a tendency for them to run lean at the top end.

Junk K-jet and convert to EFI, something like MegaSquirt, Omex, Emerald etc - lots of cost and rolling road time required to build a custom map.

You could get the head polish and ported.

Fit a stainless four branch and free flow exhaust.

Get rid of some weight out of the car - you will be amazed how much can be shaved off sprint times !!

But to be honest - first get a decent tune up (by some one that knows K-Jet). Then get a power run to get a base figure of what you have. Then work from there as budget allows.
