Timing Info Needed a.s.a.p ('89 Gti Cab)

Hi, i have recently along with my dads help attempted the head gasket. Only problem is, now that i have built the car back up again and gone to start it. Well lets just say something isnt right. I suspect the timing may have been knocked out…

What i need is as much info on resetting the timing so i can attempt it this weekend. Aided my a mechanic friend of mine:-) He says i need to find out the timing marks and allignement of the pully's and distributor etc . . . So any info is welcomed and pik's or a walkthrough would be a blessing  :D

Thank-you thank-you thank-you . . .

1st check the belt timing. for the crank use the punch mark on the flywheel, you'll have to unscrew the green bung in the top of the gearbox to see it.

for the cam use the punch mark on the inside face of the cam sprocket, line that up with the top edge of the cam cover sealing surface (not the cam cover itself, the actual head surface which you can see with rocker cover and seal removed. if its late enough to have the plastic cam cover, there will be an OT mark on the ouside of the sprocket that lines up with an arrow on the inside plastic half moon piece of the upper belt cover

last of all set the rotor arm on dizzy set it so the arm is pointing to the notch in the edge dizzy housing. put spark lead #1 where the rotor arm is pointing. this is most likely what has been knocked out, as it will spin free when the belt is loose

this will be enough to get the engine going, let it get up to temp then disconnect and plug the vac line to the dizzy. use a timing light on the flywheel to set the timing to 6deg BTDC. there is a big diamond on the fly for this, set the timing light to 0 if it has an advance/retard wheel built in.

this is what you will see with bung out, small punch mark is TDC mark for the belt timing, big diamond is 6deg BTDC. put some tipex or white paint on the marks and it'll help you see them:
