Timing belt prob

Alright, just a quick question about my 1.9 gti engine

My car idles quite well but sometimes the revs fluctuates from a steady 1000rpm to just below and then just above etc

i've noticed from the condensation from the exhaust as well as hearing it that its idling but having about a 0.5 sec gap so its sounding like it wants to cut out in a way…

My timing belt squeeks a bit and ive checked to see if its got more than half an inch of give which it doesnt seem to. When the cars warmed up its sitting on about 1500rpm give or take and sounds ok, the fluctuation is there but not as bad.

One issue i seem to have is the timing belt makes a weird squeeky sound mainly when idling which coincides with the fluctuation of the revs which doesnt seem like a coincidence to me,   but i can ever so slightly hear it when im driving… no1 else would but when its your car u can almost feel it!

I've put some oil from my dipstick onto the timing belt just to try and see if that helps as ive seen it work in the past and when i first did it, it seemed to make a difference… but i cant be doing that all the time! plus it seems less effective as times gone by.

Driving it in the snow, as well as it just being under a cover and not in a garage doesnt make me feel very good so could the weather be effecting it?

Basically i just wanted to know if the timing belt could cause this problem or could it be something worse!

timing belt is a notched one, are you thinking of the alternator belt, mine squeeks sometimes depending on the weather, adjust the tension to correct amount
not sure what your idling problem is

id start by checkign everywhre for air leaks, especially at vac lines, breathers and in the folds of the air boots. if thats all ok reset timing then have the co checked at a garage set to around 1.8% idle at 900 ish. look at the aav and wur make sure they both getting 12v when fuel pump is running

it was the alternator belt! i managed to tighten it myself, was fairly straight forward! thanks for the replies guys, cars going on the rolling road and getting a tune up soon, gna take a video of before and after i presume there'll be a big diff!

Helpful as always!
