Timing 1.6 gti

Some one please tell me the way I can set the timing on my 1.6gti. I have a timing light but no mark on the crankshaft pulley so have taken off the inspection plug on top of the flywheel. But, theres a great big water pipe above that which prevents the timing light getting above the hole and also prevents me from seeing down it.

There are also 2 marks on the flywheel, 2 square notches but I dont know what these signify?

Any ideas?

Take cylinder no1 spark plug out and put in a long screwdriver. Turn engine with spanner on crank until the cylinder is at the top of its stroke and you can see / nearly see the notches on the flywheel - if you can't it is 180degrees out. Set dizzy to no1 cylinder (about 10 or 11 o'clock) and align mark on cam sprocket with top edge of cylinder head.

Re-attach cam belt and turn over by hand for 2 full rotations to make sure there is no interference and then fire it up…
