Ticking noise????

Hi

For some reason sometimes a ticking noise comes from my engine? It doesn't seem to vary with the revs though? Its also only really audible when the car is idle (sometimes not). It sounds like a quick ticking as if something is constantly ribbing or clicking against something (don't know if that makes sense?)

Anyone come across it before?

Could be anything - alternator bearings, noise clutch bearing, etc, etc, etc…

You need to have a listen, use a screw driver against various parts with your ear pressed to the end of the handle wot work out what part the noise is coming from - careful you don't get caught up in any moving parts whilst doing this though…

That wiki description sounds pretty accurate.

Any idea how much to fix?

Its def not the exhaust or anything.

It comes and goes. WHen it comes though I lose a lot of engine power and it almost chugs if that makes sense?

Oil level/temp?  Could simply be a glased gause on the pickup for the oil pump - a sump gasket, can of fuel system cleaner and some time spent on your back with a 10mm socket will sort that one out.

What you desribe sounds like pre-ignition or possibly even detonation so it could be caused by heat or a coked up head.

I'd suggest you get a competent mechanic to look at it - and make sure he sees the problem first hand - otherwise it'll never get resolved.
