ticking engine and slightly high idle - video attached

Hi all,

ive reported a slightly high idle but still not got to the issue yet but ive also noticed that my cars quite ticky.

not sure if its being being parinoid and thats just an old engine for ya or its actually an issue.

car seems to idle about 1000rpm maybe 1200 some times.

thing is it starts great and it runs great so not really sure of the issue.

ive attached a picture of where the tickings coming from.

hope you can help

do you think if i changed the inlet and throttle body that would just sort this out as this is where the noise is coming from.

i was going to replace the injectors as well.

ticking doesnt sound all that bad to me, maybe tappets need a slight adjustment or a slight blow from the manifold/downpipe. certainly no need to replace anything :)

do you think its a case of just taking it to a garage. vw specialist just to adjust things i take it.

had enough of the slightly high idle and that ticking sounds more beetle than golf.

also the car is very fuel smelling not sure if this is due to the fact its a straight through exhaust no cat or could the high idle and smell be due to the fact that i only ever put 97/98 ron petrol in.

never ever basic stuff always premium petrol.

well to start with i would get the ignition timing checked, then look at the base idle and co settings. by the looks of it engine has been given lots of love so id assume no vacuum leaks or anything like that.

mk1 gti should always be run on premium fuel so that certainly wont be causing you any problems

i wish my bay looked that clean.

the video ofcourse is mine.

clean enough engine but nothing like that picture that was just an example.

well ive got absolutly no idea how to check the ignition timing and the base idle and co settings. shame ive got to spend the money in having someone check it out i like to do everything myself

Mine sounds like that, and at my recent (failed) MoT, the tester diagnosed that the exhaust manifold was letting by (amongst other faults). It will be sorted when we take the engine/gearbox out to weld the bulkhead studs for the steering, and change the clutch!

if there is a air leak in the manifold then would this cause high idle and also a smell of fuel?

obviously the noise would come from the fact that its not a closed system so the sound is getting out.

Turn the co screw a fraction and that should solve the Fuel smell and will lower the idle slightly, If you know a garage get it on an emissions tester while you do it and you can set the co screw properly.

Oh and slick50 works a treat on that ticking too

Would you have a pic of where the screw is.

What do I do with the slick50

Lol treat me like a baby if you could
A little step by step would be great.

On the meter head there is a little trumpet stem thing (near where the air pipe attaches) with a hole in the middle, Take a long 3mm allen key and gently turn the screw anti clockwise. you only need small adjustments, Look to get the rev needle on the lower idle mark when the engine is warm.

You can alway turn it up slighlty after if you find its a bit low.
