Thrown rod 1.6 EG series

Ok I have put my 79 GTI up for sale following engine disaster on Monday, but… if it doesn't get any interest I will swap the engine, and to be honest would love to keep it anyway

So onto my questions, the current engine is now scrap (rod through the side) and was the original 1.6 EG series engine, I have replaced lots of parts and ancillaries and the engine was running perfectly so I guess I only need the block itself (the engine actually still ran on 3 cylinders although very noisy 8O )  What is the difference between the 1.8 and 1.6 blocks / internals ?

If I struggled to find a 1.6 engine could I use most of my ancillaries on a 1.8 block including my 1.6 head etc ?

Any help much appreciated

Cheers
Kev

it would have to be a complete 1.8 injection block, as the 1.6 head is different. but yes, everything will bolt up to it and work fine :)
if its a later lump with a plastic front flange you'll need to whip this off and find an early metal front flange, then swap the 2 sensors into it from your old flange.
might be a few other differences in the pipework etc, just swap over stuff that is different!  if its got a water oil cooler, probably easier to leave this on, but I'd fit a new one as they're a bugger for blowing.

Some major differences when it comes to swapping internals and head. The 1.8 uses 144mm rods so if you want to keep the engine 1.6 you will need to replace that rod. The blocks are the same height, 220mm from centerline of crankshaft to deck so either crank/rod set will fit. The 1.6 was a 79.5mm and the largest oversize offered by VW was 80.5mm if you can still find them. The 1.8 bore is 81mm so custom pistons are in order if you again want to keep the 1.6 (although with that size bore you are no longer 1.6 anyway). The 1.6 has one front oil return and I believe all the 1.8's have two. Although the heads can be swapped between blocks with some work, filing and machining, is it worth it in this case?

Don't follow what your asking in the last part? What ancillaries? Is the car otherwise worth the effort to keep it a 1.6? Even if you use a 1.8 block and get pistons to fit, it will no longer be original and lose any value as such.

Many thanks for the detailed replies, I will look out for a good 1.6 engine I think
