The 'Y' shaped jobber on top of engine....?

Ok, I know i sound extremely dense here, but what is the grey 'Y' shaped junction thing on top of engine, is in the vacuum system as far as I can see, but cant see any pic of it or ref to it in Haynes

Its just i'm having major cold start probs at the mo and it looks like the bottom half of it is slightly melted, wondered if it could be the cause.

I know theres that list of things to do, but am changing engine soon, as long as the starting (air) system works fine i can use it on the 16V, but am having similar cold start probs with the 16V so need to resolve one of them!!

Hmmm. In my expert opinion (not) that might be to do with inlet manifold pressure, or maybe the closed circuit breather?!?! Really not got much idea   BUT

If you take it off, clean it, ensure that it's not melted through, and then put it back, again ensuring that all the pipes connected to it are sealed to it properly, then you could eliminate it as the cause of your cold start problem  :dontknow:

Hope this helps!!!  :)

Think I know the bit you mean - it is part of the vacuum system. Not sure of the its part in the system other than joining three hoses together - appears to join vacuum hose from near the aux air regulator, brake servo vacuum hose and hose runnig to 5th injector.

Regards its condition, any damage that would cause a leak in the system is going to be problematic. Not sure if it would cause cold start probelms.

I found that my one was able to be pulled apart, and when I did so while idling, the revs went up a lot. (I sealed it with some spare plastic sleeving, and some zip-ties, and all was ok after that)

If your's is leaking, you may have cold start issues, as the extra air is weakening the mixture.

Manic - Your cold strat problem - will the car start with foot full down and cranking for about 20 seconds?

Hot start OK?  Cold start Ok if you leave the car for a week?

If so suspect leaky injectors.

hot start is noticably 'better', including today when it had been sitting in sun all day!

Its not just a starting problem:

-once i've got it to catch it cant maintain revs, or does so very lumpily, maxing at a normal level just under 1000 and dropping and coming back up.   In fact giving it any throttle tends to make it cough and die!  It'll do it seemingly randomly for a good 5-10 mins.  When I bought it it was always a bit slow on uptake, ie not smooth from low revs, has been getting steadily worse.  I'll drive down teh road fine, then go to accelerate from a junction and it will go low and rough/lumpy again.

I'll try your method Rich to see…When starting at the moment I normally let it turn twice or so. stop then try again, takes a good 10-15 tries, then it'll revs up to 1000, and go lumpy, then settle fine. then i add throttle and it goes lumpy again.

ARRRGGGGHHHH

I didn't want to spend any effort on the engine as i'm taking it out 'soon' anyway, but I dont have time for another month now :(

And now i've got a rythmical noise coming from front..not good. Hoping its related to the silly camber i've been running. Oh and exhaust is blowing like a cheap ho, but thats just a dodgy C clamp.

As always, cheers for your suggestions guys…
