Tapping sound

Hi all,

The car is a mk1 golf gti 1.8… there?s a tapping sound coming from the cam cover area, its fine when idling but when you put the accelerator on even just a little bit it starts tapping. If you have experienced the same problem or know what it might be any help would be great.

it is probably the engine hydraulic tappets.
if the car has been standing for a while, the hydraulic pressure will drop, and when you go back to it, it will tap for a while then get quiet(er)
if it doesn't get quieter, then i would guess the tappetswould need renewing.

Yeah it was standing for a bit, thats prob it then….

The girlfriend had this same tapping sound on her 1990 cabs (1.8 8v carb).

The more you accelerated, the louder the tapping noise got.

She had the hydraulic lifters changed yesterday and now it is nice and quiet again.

It cost ?100 supplied and fitted (Inclusive of VAT) to get fixed from Midland VW.
