Stuck oil filter!

Just doing an oil change and also changing the sump gasket but the oilf filter feels as if it is welded tight when it should only be hand tight, what are my options for whipping this fella off so i can get on with it?!

Cheers

I use a tool which fits over the end of the oil filter and has a 3/8" square hole, which allows use of a ratchet on it. But before this, the traditional technique of hammering a screwdriver through the filter to gain leverage, is difficult to beat. If its really tight then make sure you hammer it through both sides, so it can apply more force (torque) onto the whole body of the filter instead of crushing the insides.

i have used this tool, its a draper piece that fits around the filter and tightens as you say but that wont budge it!

As much as i don't want to be a cowboy your solution sounds the best! Cheers

3/8 - 1/2 adapter and breaker bar? I'd be surprised if that can't undo it, if anything you could turn it but twist/rip the oil filter casing.

for tight 'uns I usually get an old large flat headed screwdriver and use it like a chisel on the lip of the filter near the engine side (usually bare metal - not painted).  Go at it at 45 degrees or so knocking it anti clockwise - the shock of the impacts usually breaks any seal

Warm the engine slightly (not hot) and use rubber gloves to turn it. Works every time for me.  Just be very careful when the oil comes out.  Last time i stuck a screw driver through one it just rippd it apart and got oil evrywhere

Oh not a good idea if you already drained the oil.

done, fashioned a tool out of a scrap piece of metal tubing, used the griner to form a spike then drove it through and twisted!although it only just moved!Cheers for the help..
