Stuck HELP ME please

Hi All

I have had my j plate clipper since 09 however due to work and things still have not got it running :(
I purchased her as a non runner being informed from the lady that the AA had informed her the fuel pump had gone, so i have replaced;

both fuel pumps
injectors
fuel lines
secondhand meterhead
spark plugs
new tank pipe as the other was rotten and then cleaned the tank

However when i try to start her she will run for a few seconds and then cut out, i cant rev the engine as it seems to flood. The meterhead also seems to be clicking??
I have had the injectors out and when i turn the key with the meterhead lifted all spray fine so i dont think a blockage is the problem. I just cant figure it out and really really stuck.

Has any anyone had any of these problems or knows what my problem my be?
Any help at all would be great

Thanks
Ned

J plate Clipper shouldn't have fuel injection, it should have a carburettor engine.

So, does your car have an engine conversion?

If so, and its not running, then good luck! It could be a million things. For a start, how is the high pressure pump wired in, is there a fuel pump relay, does it also have the accumulator, how thick are the fuel lines, etc. Need to see if the conversion has been bodged or done properly. Its a lot of work to properly convert carb to FI for the sake of 22bhp, so you could understand that someone might be tempted to cut corners.

Hi mate

Clipper may be the wrong word :( its a j plate mk 1 cab 1.8 GTI with k jet.

All the bits are there and i have had her running for a little when i manually life the meterhead. I was told that chances are the lifter pump was not working or producing enough pressure? So I have just changed it now and still nothing just the same few seconds of life and dead.

To me it seems like to much fuel is coming through but would not know how to adjust this?

(sorry my knowledge of injections is very poor as am use to old vw air cooled engine, nice and simple lol)

How do you know too much, or too little, fuel is coming through? How are you measuring it?

How much fuel is in the fuel tank?
When did you put it in?
How much was in just before, and when was that in?

You can probably sense what I'm getting at - for the lift pump to work, it needs a reasonable amount of fuel in there and it needs to be fresh, not 2 years old. Also if the lift pump doesn't work, if the tank is fairly full then it will still run the engine, albeit with more strain from the high pressure pump.

When you replaced the metering head, did you set the mixture properly (with instruments to measure it) or did you just fit it? What's it from (8V GTI mk1 1800?)

Another thing it might be is the 5th injector (AKA cold start injector, cold start valve) is firing and delivering fuel to start the car, but the mechanical injectors can't deliver fuel once running, possibly due to a fuel pressure issue. You can test for this by holding the throttle open and using a 12V feed to the 5th injector, and a momentary push switch, to 'blip' it providing enough fuel to run it without flooding it.
