Sticky Accelarator cable

My accelarator cable is rubbish, makes clutch control impossible.

Anyone changed one? How does the bit that goes through the bulkhead come out? None of the manuals say.

You have to wait for the bulkhead to go rusty and it then comes out a treat!!

Seriously tho, not done it myself but does it not just 'pop' out?

You just take the cable off the throttle valve and unclip it from the pedal and the grommet should just pull out of the bulkhead with the complete cable. The rubber bush in the pedal was perished on mine, VW still do them for about ?5, ridiculous price but what else can you do.

yeah the rubber bush had perished on mine to the extent that one day while driving, the cable came un-attached from the pedal!  :o

I made a new rubber bush from a couple of large tap washers trimmed to fit I seem to remember. It's still doing the job, but might get the correct part sometime. This was a rush fix because i needed to use the car.

Rubber bush?

I don't even have one. I have a bodge job that includes a jubilee clip!

Hairy thanks for your idea, I scraped off all the paint from the surrounding area and sprayed some salty water on, now sit back an wait.

On a previous MK1 I owned the bracket that the accelerator cable attached to rotted away and the cable stuck which caused the rev counter to stick at 6000 rpm. On my current car I have attached a throw away bottle to the bulkhead water out let in the engine bay which diverts the water away from the edge of the bulkhead.

Just to finish this one off.

Accelarator cable and little rubber bushing available from GSF.

Took about 10 mins to change over, not including time to persuade missus to come and help me adjust it properly!

Old cable feels like it's got sand in!

Makes the car feel so different, I have clutch control.

Best 6 or 7 quid I've spent in ages.

That's because one or more of the strands that make up the inner cable has snapped, and the raw ends are dragging on the inside of the outer casing - more would have snapped soon and then you'd be at the side of the road with an idle-only Golf  8O
