I'll assume starting from cold - if its starting from hot, let us know. Easy check - unplug the 5th injector. If its the same, then suspect this, the thermo time switch, or the associated wiring.

if from stone cold it could be down to the wur, but ideally you need to get it on a set of pressure gauges to diagnose the problem one way or the other.

Mine does this. Starts fine in the evening if its been used in the morning. But, start ot in the morning from cold, bad starting, poor running until after 2 or 3 miles, then its fine.  :dontknow:

On the cabby we had similar problems, it turned out to be leaking injectors, so on startup it had to deal with the fuel leaked into the cylinders and refilling the lines.

Hi, I have a similar problem with my cab 1.8 GTI.

From cold It takes about 10 seconds of cranking to start, then takes a few minutes to warm up and the revs to settle. It then runs perfectly.

When the engine is hot it starts first time. When I unpluged the 5th injector (cold start valve) it started first time. What does this indicate?

Any advise appreciated.

Worth checking the power going to your starter motor with a multimeter. Try cleaning your earths if you haven't already.

I have a similar problem with mine. Does seem to start fine when hot though.

I had exactly the same outcome. Fired up straight away. Anyone got any ideas?

I thought it might be the fifth injector making it over fuel on start up.
