starting a 16v for 1st time after conversion

Post

ok been doing a 16v conversion for ages now and i'm at the stage where i'ts time to see if it works

i know it turns over and has oil pressure because i tested it with a battery before i put my loom in

now my loom is in and nearly all wired up, the airflow meter is not connected does it have to be to get it to tick over ?

when i turn my key i can hear a few things clicking around where the fusebox and ecu is but nothing happens, all fuses are fine and earths are good, all i want to do is to get it to tick over

is there a check list i should follow ? do i need my air flow meter connected ?

this is my 1st conversion so don't know what is required at this stage can someone please help

thanks

Hia mate you dont need the air flow connected to get it to tick over. Do your clocks light up? Check your earths i had problems with the two little ones that go to the side of the block which caused mine to have problems starting.

it has no clocks in, and i only have one earth on the rocker cover which goes to the main earth on the chassis. where does the other one go ?

There should be two little earths that go to the side of your block below the dizzy, makes life easier if you plug your clocks in.
Whip a plug out and check for a spark, take your bottom fuel line off and check fuels getting threw when you turn it over. If you've got fuel and a spark it should run.

i don't think i have any earthing points under my dizzy, will check tonite

i thought there was only one on the engine, on top of the rocker cover ?

when i turn the key the plugs spark and can hear fuel pump kick in  (no fuel in tank though)

will check all earths again tnite and try again

any more ideas if its not the earths ?

all earths are fine but still nothing

going to try a different fuse box see if that works

just want it to tick over from ignition so don't think i need fuel to do that

Are you backward mate how do you think it will run with no fuel? Do you understand what engines do i.e. burn fuel!! i dont think any amount of advice is going to deal with your issues................

eh..........can you not read what i am trying to achieve ? i.e.  tick over from ignition

if your not going to say something to help me don't comment !!!!!!!

i don't want your help if your going to talk like that to me

Hello mate, you will need petrol in the tank in order to get your car to tick-over, the process is as follows:

On turning the ignition on, a short pulse (about 1- 3 seconds) is sent to the fuel pump to pressurise the fuel rail. Once the starter motor starts to turn the engine, a 12v pulse is fed back to the ECU from the negative side of the coil. The ECU then turns on the fuel pump and energises the fuel relay that provides a fixed 12 volt supply to all the injectors. The transistors in the ECU start to ground the injectors with a longer pulse than the normal idle pulse for about 3 seconds. This provides enough fuel to start the engine and should then allow the engine to tick-over.

Some other things that may affect tick-over include:
Correct air / fuel ratio
Perfect Ignition / burn, i.e. faulty HT leads, distributor cap, rotor arm, ignition amplifier, coil, plugs etc.
Ignition timing

Hope that helps!?

Ok so then the cause could be:

The battery is dead
The wires connecting the battery to the started motor are corroded
Corroded or poorly connected Earth somewhere
Faulty starter motor
Also as said before get some clocks in it, turn the key to the first position (not all the way to start it) if the red warning dash lights don't come on (and the battery connections are ok) chances are your ignition switch may be faulty
Moisture inside distributor cap, if so clean it out with a clean, dry cloth
