Speedo cable

Hi guys, my speedo isnt reading so i thought id take a look at the cable.  I removed the bolt but couldent shift it from the gearbox and i didnt want to start pulling too hard after reading i may lose the gear off the end.  Do they nornally slip straight out or do they require a good pull? It seems like its jammed and that this might be my speedo not working problem? any ideas? cheers

There's a metal plate, this normally needs levering off (worth cleaning up the area beforehand), then it should pop out easily.

I managed to free it off and there was no drive gear on the end.  I found an old one tried that and nothing.  Then i reaslised that the metal cup hadnt pushed all the way into the gearbox so i drove it in.  I drove it a bit too far and squashed the rubber boot that sits underneath it a bit too much meaning i couldent get the short bolt in through the clamp.  At this point i was seething lol and should have walked away but i continued and damaged the speedo cable meaning i now need a new one.  Definately one of those days and the culmination of messing about with it for three weeks solid trying to get the thing on the road.  It now has an mot but im finding it difficult to get excited at the moment as there are still some crap jobs left.  Can anyone recommend where i might get another speedo cable from? cheers

Just found a post saying GSF sell them.  Dont suppose anyone has a new one lying around they wish to sell do they?

Well i have fitted a new cable at one end but im struggling to engage it into the gearbox end.  Is it a case of rotating it and applying downward force until the cable gear engages with the gearbox gear? Has anyone found theres to be tricky to fit? if not i suspect there may be an old gear still in there although i couldent feel anything.

They are straight forward to fit if you make sure the gear is held in place by the little circlip on the end of the cable and rock the car slightly if it doesn't slide in to place easily.

If that doesn't work are you sure the old gear isn't stuck in the gearbox and preventing you from inserting the new one?

I have had a feel around where the gear sits and i cant feel anything, i think its just a case of having a play for longer and seeing if i can get it to engage, will be having another go tomorrow

Try getting an assistant to turn the other end of the cable as you hold it in place and see if it slots in that way. It definintely goes in with minimal pressure.

Slotted in fine in the end, just required more patience than i had until i had a break lol
