sluggish in cold

hi i have a 89 cabriolet clipper 1.8 which is a bit hard to start when cold e.i 1st thing in the morning.. u need to rev it just to get it to turn over.. then when u pull away it is very sluggish.. it has a n automatic choke so what do u think the prob is??
