Slipping cluch????

Hi - just wondered if anyone can help/point me in the right direction.
My Golf is a 1.6i GTI and when I go to accelerate whilst already in gear the rev counter flys up along with the engine, but it takes a few seconds to get any power to the tarmac - Is this what is known as a slipping cluch???
Any light on the subject will be greatly appricatated.
Thanks

Yep,sounds like it,although it might be oil on the plate coming through the pushrod seal.Replace the seal if it has gone or not,and put a luk or a sachs clutch in.

Definatley a slipping clutch, if the cluch is contaminated with oil you will have to replace it, is it new or been in for a long time? if so. it just worn out. Has the clutch bite been high? it's a good indicator that it's worn out.

thanks for your help guys.

there is no burning smell of clutch, and I haven't had a problem getting into any of the gears - so it sounds like the oil.

I had the engine replaced at the begining of the year and I swear I kept the old clutch from that engine. Right, I think its time i headed for the shed in search of the clutch. Wish me luck!!!!

I have a similar problem with my golf but it's no where near as bad as that. It's definitely the clutch slipping by the sounds of it. I don't get the smell of burning clutch when it is slipping and the bite is fine. It's really noticible when trying to accelerate quickly from first lifting the clutch till 2nd till 3rd it slips. Revs are high but not going anywhere quickly!

Sorry no more knowledge than anyone who'sposted previously just telling you my bit!

I also have a mystery slipping clutch. Had a new clutch about a year ago and started slipping a couple of moths ago. Will only do it high above 4000rpm and under full throttle, particularly up hills. However some journeys won't do it at all :dontknow:

When you replace the Clutch you MUST replace the push rod seal at the same time.

If you don't it will fail and p gearbox oil on your nice new clutch.
