Sick Cabby in need of help!

I have an ongoing intermittant problem with my '93 Rivage. It loses power/stalls really sporadically, often when decelerating, but also sometimes when just driving along. Then won't start again for a minute or two, then fine again. V annoying and also quite dangerous!!

VW specialist garage at wits end having checked all the expected things and now at stage of 'trying' a couple of potentially costly things.

Anyone had similar experience or know of what the problem might be??

Thanks in advance

What have the garage done to it so far? And what have they looked at?

that sounds like either water/rust/mud in the injection system, or the little filter sock in the fuel tank is blocked, same symptom as many have had or will get!!! check the fuel filler neck under you off side rear arch, there will more than likely be a rusty hole somewhere!!

worth checking the coil too. sounds a bit more like an electrical gremlin than fuel to me. as topper says, what has the garage done/checked?

Not quite sure what they've already investigated to be honest, other than checking electrics/distributor. Think I might now have found another mechanic who has come across similar problems with other Mk1's so will pursue that.

Thanks for suggestion on rust - will pass it on!

I've heard of something similar, where a MK2 did the same thing.  It was the ignition module, which had a bad thermal path to its heat sink.  The car would run fine, then the engine would suddenly stop and could not be restarted for a while.  Big
