Rocker Cover Screw peg things

Well tightened up rocker cover nuts as thought this might help the solve my oil leak.

Any way the two that hold down the cover for the timing belt just started spinning. Have had to cut the nuts of and now the pegs are mullered, and I've removed them with mole grips.

Do VW still do these screw in pegs (they better) and also how do you screw them in tight so as you don't mess up the thread where the nut goes.???????

Going to change my gasket now while I'm at it and hope this helps the leak. But for now car is off the road.  :banghead:

Any help aprreciated. Would the car leak oil from the rocker when at standstill as the oil level in there is well below the rocker line.

Just had a genius moment  8)

To screw the pegs in tight, you could put two nuts on one end, and tighten these nuts against eachother. Then use the top nut to screw the peg in.

Not sure about the oil leak though… No oil should leak from it while the engine is stopped…

Cheers buddy, will give that a whirl when I get the new pegs…..

Yeah didn't think it should be leaking when the engine was stopped but its deffo coming from that area, and it only does it when the engine is still hot so I'm hoping that this will solve it.

I got a new gasket from VW and it came with new studs/pegs. The gasket was different to the old one and needed the new studs as they were slightly different.

The new gasket was a rubber one and the old one was the cork one with the separate pieces at the ends.

I removed all the old studs with a monkey wrench, was a bit daunting doing it as once the wrench stripped the threads there was no going back!

Be careful if you do use the 2 nut on the peg trick not to damage the threads on the new studs, it is easily done, i wouldn't really recommend it but dont know of a better way to do it!

Cheers Ross any idea of the cost of the new gasket and pegs. Also is the 2 nut way the way you screwed the pegs in, or how did you do it.

When I replaced my gasket with new pegs I remember just doing them up hand tight and then gently tightening the slightly more with some pliers. They really don't need to be too tight anyway as the nuts will tighten in the same direction and hold the cam cover down securely.

I think I did them up the same way as russt.

They have become quite rusty now though and when I unscrewed 2 nuts to get the cam cover off the studs came out with the nuts so obviously they're not night enough. Next time I have the cover off again i'll do the same and replace the studs and use a bit of anti-seize copper grease to stop them rusting up.

I cant remember the price but it wasn't much at all, give you local VW branch a call.

Cheers,

Ross

Well went into VW, who reckoned they needed my engine code.

Anyway have phoned them and ordered a gasket for my engine code (DX) and have also ordered the pegs separately as they said nothing about new pegs coming with the gasket.

Gasket was ?9 ish + Vat does this all sound right, and then ordered 3 pegs which I need and  1 spare in case anything goes wrong.

Hoping to have this Friday so I can get it working for weekend.

Make sure the rocker cover itself is not bent otherwise no amount of new gaskets will seal. When you have it off check with a straight edge metal ruler or something, if it's 'gappy' try tapping with a hammer and dolly, failing that it's off to the old scrappy for a replacement off a MK2 - or a MK1 if your really lucky.

Well its off so will check for straightness later, and try and re-work if it needs it. Don't really want to go walking round scrappies just yet.
