replacing my DX engine in my 83 gti with EV both solid lift

Post

i am replacing my current dx with an ev engine thats in much better condition i was told its pretty much a straight swap with all parts being able to bolt straight onto the EV from my current engine.

my 2 worries at the moment are…

the injectors  - my dx engine has newish injectors with new seals they are straight slim bodies with straight tips i think the injector seat/housing thats screws into the cylinder head for these are the one piece ones that are about £9 each on ebay.

the injectors on the EV engine ( the tip of the injector where the fuel comes out has a top hat/cap)  where an absolute pig to get out they where so stuck i could lift the engine off the floor by an injector.  so now they are out the injector seats ( 2 piece seats a metal top half that screws in and a lower plastic collar thats pushed in first down into the cylinder head) they crumbled and broke getting them out.

so looking at buying the new seats for this EV engine i am wondering do i buy the seats for the dx engine and use my good condition dx injectors (if its that simple)
or do i buy the same seats as i just removed 2 piece and buy new top hat style injectors.. and also new injector lines because im told the threads are different on the 2 injectors?

also there is an extra hole on the back of the ev cylinder head looks like an air hose pushes onto the plastic nipple..   how does this come into play when deciding what route to take with these injectors

i am keeping all the current engine compenents if possible.. ie metering head inlet manifold, alternator and so on IF possible..

could somebody tell me the easiest route of completing this engine swap at this stage.  and if its juts as simple as buying the DX style injector seats and blanking off the nipple on the back of the EV head because thats my impression at the moment.

many thanks in advance for reading through my dribble

Regarding the seats, i would use the dx ones, however the top hat should come off and go on the dx injector. Also the ev head will have an air pipe at somepoint on the rear that will need blanking off.

The difference between the DX and the EV is that the EV has air shrouded injectors, I think a google search will explain better than I can, I think it was an emisions thing.
Edit:
Like Warren says, either replace the EV airshrouded seats and fit the top hats to your DX injectors or fit DX seats and DX injectors (no top hat) and blank the vacuum port

ok i understand it better now.  i am going to use the dx injectors and seats from the engine currently in my car..

hopefully the seats come out of the dx head in one piece..  because the seats in the EV head crumbled to pieces when trying to remove them.

as for the air pipe on the ev head i will just find a way to block that.

thanks again

yh it seems like there are 3 different types of injector seats

the one piece
the 2 piece with brass top
and 2 piece both top and bottom being plastic

and then various injectors air shrouded and straight but with different threads within the same style injector.

i will pop an injector out of my dx engine in the car and try and remove the seat if it comes out easily i can order 4 of them and put them in the ev engine.. if they break or i cant tell what style seat it is well then i will be back to pester you lot again.

ok so that doesnt work..  the injector seats from the DX are bigger (wider) and do not fit into the EV head.

same as the DX injectors no not fit into the injector seats that are in the EV head…

For a short period, I think in 84, air shrouded injectors had M22 seats rather than M24

so i think my only option here is to buy the correct injector seats for the head. the 2 piece ones and hopefully once there in the cylinder head my current injectors from the dx will fit..

the reason for all of this is my replacement engine ive picked up (EV) doesn't have fuel lines or metering head with it and the injectors look battered. where as my current injectors from the old engine in the car are perfect as are the lines and metering head..

Dan, you can fit DX injectors in the air shrouded seats, BUT you must blank off the vacuum port on the back of the head. Best to do it now as its a pain to do later. Its possible to tap it 1/8NPT and screw in a plug. You can do it M10 x 1.0 also..

you could just put a short piece of vaccum hose on the air shrouding nipple and put a bolt in it ;)

that would of been the ideal solution had i not broken the plastic nipple from the plastic plate when removing the cylinder head..  im sure a bolt into the plastic plate would do just the same.. hopefully
