RED RED hot manifold!!
i am stuck with this one, my manifold glows bright cherry red after about 3 minits on tickover. now the timing is bang on, and the mixture is perfect between 4 and 6 on the co machine, so ive bin told. but still my manifold glows. any other ideas why???????

If that is not a typo (typing mistake) then you are way rich and no wonder the manifold is red. For most engines, didn't notice what yours was, 1% is normal to rich depending and some are half that (newer engines). Now if that is .4 to .6 then it's fine or even lean.

Vacuum leak or your engine is running too lean, too much air flowing through. Try spraying carb cleaner around your inlet manifold (have a bucket of water handy :mrgreen: ) and if the rpm shoots up replace gasket.

Did you figure it out in the end?
Could it be that your valves are worn?
Maybe just best to get a replacement engine. And while your there get a replacement personality and sense of humour.
And it's not big and not clever to go aroud calling people a 'div' lol.
Especially not PMing a load of abuse as you've done.

Would normally only ever glow red under load.
Wouldnt ever do it at idle as the amount of air and fuel required to raise the temperature to that degree just wouldnt be feasible.
If youve been driving it then expect it to glow- it will do, but if youre saying that you go outside of a morning and turn the key, leave it idling and 3 mins later its glowing then i dont see how thats possible.
Requires lots of fuel and air to be burnt at a high rate to raise the temperature and thats just not going to happen at idle.

that's exactly what i was thinking and hence why i asked if it was painted! lol
I saw the 2.5t volvo engine be tested in a lab on discovery once and that was only a dull red (exhaust) after 4 hours at 4500rpm!
It's not even got a turbo!

Yep, i used to work on a rolling road and itd take longer at full throttle than 3 mins to make the exhaust manifold of a volvo 240 glow even cherry red at full throttle under heavy load so how this ones happening i just dont know.
Take some video of it happening for us, thatd be a start i suppose, maybe the circumstances arent as theyre being described?

my 4 branch stainless steel manifold also glows red after only a few mins ticking over, its due to the fact the stainless steel is very thin and there is no cast iron to take away the heat. you will allso notice it cools down quick to.

Gotta admit, ive never seen a manifold glow at idle.
Material must be very thin, im wondering if its that thin then hows it going to stand up to the kinds of temperatures an engine at WOT can generate?
Surely itd deform and lose structural integrity?
This is usually why exhaust manifolds are so heavily built to withstand anything an engine can throw at it.

i'd also say that if it's getting that hot then your pistons aren't far off melting either.

Old thread I know. Take a look at this ! My four branch manifold burning up red hot at idle my closet to 1.5 WTH lol
