really rubbish idle/start up

hey, i know there is many posts about this, but for some reason the work computer wont let me use the search tool on the site so here goes….

When i try and start my car in the mornings it goes, only just….Then, whenever i have to stop for some reason, if i dont rest my foot on the accelerator a little it will stall/idle rougher than a badgers ass.

Im guessing that this is'nt the norm…SO what can i do to sort it out?!

Many thanks!

could be a number of things, but as a guess I'd start looking for air leaks, if your getting unmetered air in, the mixture will be too lean and cause all sorts of issues..

what's the running like when you put your foot down? any hesitation or spluttering?

no it doesn't hesistate or stutter, apart from when she is first started……..The idle has always been fairly low, but within the last two days its started stalling cos its that low.

 :dontknow:

does it improve once she's warmed up?

in that it doesn't stall, however the idle is always around the zero mark on the rev counter…

So it's running normal, but won't idle when cold and takes a bit more effort to start.. then when warm, idle's but only just

does it start ok once warm? even after say 15-20 minutes? or still the same?

yeh!

drove to swindon to pick up some new wheels yesterday, loaded them up, restarted and she was fine, so its ok at restarting when she is hot, but still idles really badly, very lumpy and vibrates a lot..

you can tell that she is a woman, treated her to a new set of wheels, and she is still not happy!

Have you thought of a name for yours yet?

Nope.. still nameless at the moment

I think they're never happy

not entirely sure what's causing your problem though but it might be worth adjusting the idle control screw on the back of the throttle body, a little turn out should raise the idle enough

be worth checking for air leaks too IMO

cool, how would i go about checking leaks?

Is there a certain procedure with the idle control screw, or do i just do it? Being rather dense i dont actually know where the throttle body is…any pointers?

got some wheels which are in need for a refurb, but are pretty cool, or will be….bbs stylie, gona have black centre's with a polished lip…

Good call with the wheels! going for some ATS classics myself when money allows

throttle body is on the right-hand side of the inlet manifold.. follow the black pastic tube from the airbox by the battery and it's at the other end of it (if that makes sense??).. the idle screw is on the back of it.. 7mm spanner IIRC (which is bad considering mine fell out and had to replace not so long ago   )

If your at the Berkshire meet on wednesday I'm sure we'll be able to give you a hand and/or pointers

ATS classics will look slick! i want them one day….although the amount its gonna cost me refurbing the wheels i shoulda just bought them, o well!

Will have to have a poke around tonight with a torch and a spanner in hand, and hope that it solves my problem…..

wednesday should be cool….
