Problems starting from cold, 1983 1.8 DX Engine.

Hi everyone,

wanted some advise regarding the above, 1.8 DX engine (1983). basically, if i come to it in the morning or even after work to go home,  it takes ages to start, just keeps on turning, this has only recently starting happening around a week and a half ago, if i keep trying it will eventually fire on maybe 2 cylinders, i then put my foot down a little and it's misfiring like mad, then it "feels" like it clears then it runs like an absolute dream, idle, the way it drives etc. then if i turn it off and start it again it seems to be ok.

Now, there is no blue or white smoke coming out of the back.

i will admit, i am quite new to these engines,

sorry to be a pain but does anyone have any rough ideas?  :dontknow:

i tried to look for the idle speed control valve (bit like my old mk2 8v and 16v) and can't see the same sorta thing to maybe clear out.

my dad when i was turning it over pulled the (what looks like the 5th injector that is situated on the inlet manifold) plug off the back of this and it seems to start, but with the missfire, put it back on and missed still be eventually "cleared", maybe this was coincidence?

sorry to blabber, if anyone has any ideas, i would be greatful.

thanks in advanced

Someone else might be able to give you better help but on my 83 dx engine i had trouble with the distributor cap and sounds similar to the trouble your having, no harm changing it anyway as there cheap, theres no isv on the dx engine

i know it sounds wrong but thats what it was for me

start with timing and fuel mixture, worth while being correct. it could be the 5th injector or the thermo time switch or even the wur. start with the cheapest easiest options to test.
