problem starting when warm

hi all,
im new to the golf game having only owned mine for under a week so forgive me if its a daft question but…….my car 1.8 8valve starts first time from cold then runs fine when driving but if i stop then try and start again straight away it wont fire up  :? it turns over but wont properly start up.

it happened the first day i bought it after i had been for a spin i left it on the drive for a minute went inside to fetch something and then couldnt start it to move it  :banghead: after leaving it overnight though it started fine again the next morning this wasnt so much of a problem but i have just stalled it pulling in to the end of my street  :redfaced: and i have had to leave the car there as it wouldnt start  :dontknow:  im going to leave it for a bit to cool down and then go and try again

any of you experts know what could be wrong before i go and get robbed blind at my local garage?

thanks and any info much appreicated

had the exact same problem recently , with the help of this forum i sourced the problem to the non-return-valve after the fuel pump.

some other links i found during the process of elimination

Hi mate,
mine is an auto and it's a common fault, on them at least.
I had a new starter from GSF, never had a problem since.

there loads about this problem

just search for HOT STARTING and loads should come up

it's all to do with your fuel system as it might lose preasure, the metering head might need cleans, the thermo time switch might be broke, leaking injectors the list is endless

its a process of illimination, there are tests in the haynes for the TTS and CSV so i'd start with them

but have a good search and if those don't help then you can always as

just an update i have had my car in the garage for the last few weeks and they thought it was the accumulator but that didnt fix it and then tried the cold start valve/injector and they think that has cracked it,wastn a cheap process but at least i acn drive it around now  :D

Hi
sorry but i cant understand what the cold start valve/injector has got to do with warm starting - The TTS (thermo-time-switch)stops it operating above 35 deg
please advise if i am wrong
thanks

trouble is, some cars have been messed about with to compensate for bits not at thier optimum. i would, however, not have thought the 5th injector was the issue. it adds more fuel when the engine is cold. if it was not working, then the engine would, in thoery be running lean on cold starts and therefore be rough/want to conk out. unless the car was running way rich, then the non working cold start could make sense. the very basics are where to start. does it settle down to a nice idle when warm? how does it run when cold/warm?

all my issues were down to an incorrect fuel mix - went round the houses to get to the issue but I now have a whole host of spare parts!

i dont pick it back up until this afternoon but it before did start easy from cold but sound a little lumpy for a minute or two and then ran fine from warm until it got hot and then it cut out and wouldnt start again until it had cooled down (usualy around 1hour 20mins) it had never actualy cut out before until on the way to the garage  :redfaced: il give it a good run when i get it back and post an update then

i just hope its running nicely now so i can get some use out of it and go on some nice runs  8)

another update

i had the bits done as mentioned above and at first it seemed to work fine i drove the 5 miles home, stopped then started it again went to pick a mate up,stopped started it again and then went to a shop for 5 minutes came out and it wouldnt start  :banghead: so it looks like i have payed just shy of £400 for no solution

whats next on the list to try?

any help much appreciated i just want to get it running properly so im not scared to drive it

Hi

It could be a few things, but it really does sound like your losing your fuel pressure which will cause the fuel in the lines to vaporize & in turn the vaporised fuel will not open a mech injector

Fuel under pressure eg 3 bar has a higher point of vaporising.
there is a tremendous heat in that area on the mk1 because the inlet & exhaust manifold are located on the same side of the head with the injectors right in the middle of the heat source

non-return-valve after fuel pump £20 , my money is on this
fuel accum £150 ish
meterhead - second hand
fuel leak
or just fuel vapour escaping

Next time it doesnt start , floor the accelarotr pedal & turn it over for a min with out stopping & it should start - but prob not wise to do this if its a ignition prob - pull a injector next time its not starting & see if there is fuel .

hope some of that makes sense , I've rushed it

do a google search on
cis vapour lock
cheers
baz

ps the non-return-valve might just be stuck open & only need the dirt disloged its only a 3mm bore approx , its bolted straight onto the fuel pump.

On my GTI it was the Hall sender in the dizzy….local auto-electrician (Eric Petts - and he's GOOD) diagnosed it, replaced it…no probs since (would have only cost a few more ££££'s for a new dizzy though)….

im struggling to get the time to take my car back to the garage as i am working every hour god sends at the moment

i think im going to buy a non return valve and get a mechanic mate to fit it and see how that goes before taking it back and getting robbed blind again, will i have a problem getting just the non return valve on its own or will i need to buy a full pump and valve?

update again-
i had a non return valve after the pump fitted by a mate of mine aswell as a new pipe that connects it and again it seemed to of fixed the problem for a while and i have been out in it a few times without any trouble BUT i have just taken it on a drive (3miles) and left it outside my girlfriends house for around 2 hours and went out to drive home and it wouldnt start  :banghead:  im still there now leaving it for a bit before i try again so i dont flood it/flatten the battery

so now the list of things i have done are as follows

new accumulator
new 5th injector/cold start valve
new non return valve after fuel pump+new hose and fitting

whats next on the list then chaps? im slowly running out of patience and i am desperate to get a good few weeks out of the beast before the cold weather sets in once more

edit- i am now home i left it another 20mins and it started fine and drove the mile home

surely i have to be a way down the list of things to try  :dontknow:
