I would suggest getting some head work done, getting a fast road cam (kent gs2?), a 4 into 1 manifold, K&N panel air filter, audi throttle body and warm up regulator and a rolling road tune up. Should be able to get all of that for ?1000.

Stealth Racing come well recommended for head work / rolling road tune up. Supersprint manifold? Scrappy for Audi stuff - search forum for cars you can scavenge from…

With all this done you might want to uprate the brakes. 16v master cylinder and servo and 256mm discs - Use either audi 80 calipers and carriers (if you can find a 2nd hand pair at a decent price) or you can use astra gte calipers and carriers with either some tophat bolts or drill and retap the vw hubs to accept m12 bolts. http://www.vwgolfmk1.o…ghlight=vauxhall+calipers
Anyone else any suggestions?

5 cylinder audi throttle body from a breakers always a good idea. ported polished head with a nice cam another good idea. 2 litre audi block. 4 branch manifold. or a mk3 2 litre 16v engine. depends on how much work you want to do and how much you can do yourself. talk to places like tsr or big boys toys if your doing the work yourself

Don't talk to tsr… They have gone bust!

Do a google / yahoo search for "joe cell" , and buy some physics/chemistry books , maybe a few engineering books to

yeah thanks for that useless information
i want to increase the power and performance of my car with around ?1000 pounds dont know what sort of mods i could do with the budget .Like the idea of a 4in to1 manifold there are some nice stainless ones on ebay also would i be able to get the head skimmed ported and polished. And maybe bigger injectors or and a nice set of cams and pulleys..If so where is the best place to take it too.

have you considered a transplant you could do a 16v for 500 easy then spend the other 500 on a head and cams

Personally I wouldn;t spend money on a 4 branch manifold as I have been told in the past that the standard cast manifold if ported properly gives as good an increase in power. Also the tubular ones have a habit of breaking of they are not good quality.

Best option if you like the feel fo the 1.8 lump woudl be to go the 2ltr route running ported head and cam. Gives good power (can see around 140BHP) and stil lhas the typical torque feel of the 1.8 lump. But if you want soemthing that is a top end screamer then go the 16v route, that woudl keep you entertained for a while in std form, but the manifold you need is a bit prciey to do the conversion and you would probably eat up m,ost of the money you have on the engine and manifold and other bits alone with nothing left for tuning it.

Thats my thoughts for what there worth anyway,

Zis ist true , vw spend 1000`s developing engines , a munky with a dyno and some stainless pipe work wont nesesaraly produce a better manifold . Thats why i got a supersprint one , although there where some clearence issues . i wouldnt by anything else than something from a reputable tuner.
The main flaw in the 8v`s is the head . they are soooo restricted . Opening the ports will improve the performance dramatically , and big valve conversions are the way to go for bigger bhp numbers .
To be honest the 1.8 block is pretty good , its strong and revvey so tuning the head aswell will result in you needing to uprate the clutch  .
Im running a
tsr 1.9 donnington engine (block)
gas flowed head with stainless valves
tsr 103 cam in a solid head
mk2 throttle body
16v rising rate regulator
volve metering head
power roar and pannel filter
close ratio box
supersprint 4 branch
jetex system .

this set up gave 142.3 bhp before i put the jetex system on so i think its safe to assume she`s upto 145 sumthing .
If i were you id look at going to town on the head and cams then source on ebay a mk2 body , 16v regulator and an early 1.6 metering head .
if you 16v it your insurance companys gonna shaft you (probably) and imo the 16v lump is to heavy in the front of a mk1 . Vw made it that way for a reason , dont change it just improve it . If you sort out the head , i wouldnt go any further than a pack "c" speck , flowed and ported with slightly larger valves in a solid head , flow the inlet where the mk2 body bolts on and use the 16v regulator and 1.6 head to sort the fueling then youll have a mega snappy pull in any gear little ripper . I dont see any reason why you couldnt bump yourself upto 140+ bhp and not make the under bonnet appear any differnt to Mr.Officer .

Or design a joe cell

After all those mods you could easily drop a 16v motor straight in with a good rolling road set-up and see 150bhp straight out of the tin,

with regards to the 16v motor being too heavy, I can't see it being much heavier, not enough so that it affects handling anyway. maybe you're thinking of the VR6 lump!!

Some great reading there. Worth a look for anyone slightly interested in engine tuning.

A 16v wont give 150 bhp in standard trim unless u use an abf and the electronic fuel injection ststem from thr mk3 , thats where all the extra weight is .

You cant just throw a set of cams in a 16v , u HAVE to port the head or the bhp numbers will fall .

U can use the inlet cam from an early kr head but u`ll only get 147bhp ish after 3500rpm and the poweband will be nowhere near as broad as my 8v`s   drivability is more important to me
