Jon,

Check that the induction hose is not disconnected - this big hose thae goes from the metering head to the engine.

If OK do prowler's injection test - found at www.vwgolfmk1.co.uk and report back with your results.

the injectors themselves are ok, its just that there is no fuel to them! what governs the fuel pressure in the injection system mate?

jon,

Do the test.  It's not to check the injectors but to see what happens when you try to do the test.  Report back.  Your results will enable us to diagnose your problem more easily.

Also check the cold start valve (5th injector) is operating correctly.

just one more question, how does the fuel system create pressure and what governs it? then ill do the test.

The fuel pump geneates the pressure and the pressure control valve in the metering head controls the pressure.  The warm up regulator modifies the pressure slightly when cold which richens the mixture.  The accumulator helps smooth transient pressure.

you won't get fuel at the top or injectors unless the the flap in the airbox is lifted, either by air through the intake or manually lifted, but u have to do this with care if u damage the plate or scratch the sides your airflow meter may not perform properly afterwards.
but just because the pump is pumping doesn't mean its the rite pressure.

better but idle high now

hey guys, fixed the problem, the flap was stuck down and not being lifted by the manifold vaccuum! works fine now.
one more question though. when warm it seems to idle too high! doesnt seem to be the 5th injector as i tried removing this. any ideas? Jon
