Piston Problems...

Hi,

I'm currently rebuilding my 1.8 8V DX engine and when I got to the pistons, one of them looked worse for wear…the 3rd one. I was told it needed to be replaced and now i'm just listing the options I have.

Can someone please help me to answer the following questions…

- Is it possible to use pistons from another engine? say, an EV engine off a mk2? or does it have t be a DX engine piston as well?
- If the other 3 pistons are ok, do I have to replace ALL of them? or can I get away with just changing the one?
- Where can i buy a new or 2nd hand piston? (Check GSF but haven't asked crazyquiff…)

I greatly appreciate any help with this matter, my mechanical knowledge is limited, but i'm trying….

lol thanks jellybelly.

It depends what's wrong with the piston… what did the person say?

I'm a beginner myself but would say that if you're replacing the piston then it's probably worth replacing the shells etc too while it's out.  There is a gudgeon pin that holds the piston on the conrod.. this may need replacing too  :dontknow: ..

I got oversized pistons as my cylinders needed a re-bore.  I got them from TSR Performance.  Quick delivery, gudgeon pin, circlips and rings included.  They were German made and seem good… complete nightmare to put in though.. you need a good jubilee type piston ring clamp mate… oil the walls of it.. slide the piston in and push it home.. are you confident in doin that?

Thanks for the replies guys…

Spud, gotta say….sweet thread on the rebuild man…learnt a lot while reading and discovered other parts i thought I should replace….Thanks!

The problem is one of the pistons looks to be a bit worn around where one of the piston rings sit.

The person said the whole piston needs to be replaced…

Here's a pic to show u what i mean…

I've checked the cylinders and i don't think a rebore is needed…

So…the question now is,

Would it be ok if i just replaced the one? Or would I have to replace all of them?

If so, Where can i get them? breakers?

I'm ordering new piston rings, main bearings and connecting bearings, anything else?

Ouch  8O !!!!  That looks bad!!

Where abouts are you located mate?  Don't give your whole address just your region.

When doing mine I was told by Bert (a mechanic on here  :D ) to make sure the cap goes back on the same way, to replace the shells and to also replace the nuts.  Which I've now done just to try and minimise problems when they're back on.

Spud, I'm in South East Asia. Borneo Island to be exact.

I have to replace the shells AND the nuts?

Oh man, does GSF sell them? I can get stuff from GSF relatively easy since they can deliver from the heathrow branch…

Do breakers in UK sell individual pistons for a DX engine?

You don't have to but it's a high speed part of the engine so it's safer to I guess.
