I wanted to use enamel since I regard it as a tougher paint. Epoxy (like appliance paint) or powdercoat would be superior, but costlier.
Prep is the real key - scrape crud and loose paint off. Sand or strip paint and rust off.
DEGREASE - DEGREASE - DEGREASE.
Shoot a light coat first to see if any paint tries to pull back (fisheye) - this would indicate more degreasing would be needed.
Shoot mulitple coats in thin passes to prevent drips.

Dead easy, reasonable result (it' ain't gonna win any prizes, but it no longer looks like the engine is in need of a match).
Barbecue cleaner is good for degreasing, Fairy Power Spray is also good but costly. A ?2 plastic washing up basin and a ?1 set of scrubbing brushes will make the job a lot easier.
