overheating???

hi all i have got a 88 softtop 1.8 8v after about of ten mins of runing it reads 3/4 of the way up i have changed the water pump temp sender fan switch head gasket rad cleand down earths checkd wirein fuse box was very corroded and sum of the relays have swopd it for a good one but couldnt get hold of a relay 26 this one seemd to be slotd ontop of the fusebox but car still starts and runs also looked like wirein had been messd with in the past i have also changed the header tank cap thermostat and flushd  the system correct coolent and mix in there an no air lock what eles could it be?thanks

Its probably just the sender, I had the same thing but the engine didn't seem hot so I didn't bother about it. Found an old sender one day that must have fallen intio my toolbox at the scrapyard, put it in and the gauge sits smack in the middle now.

this is sender number 5 after 4 gsf ones i got a new one from vw so cant be that?thanks for ur reply

electrical fault,if you pull the wire off the sender what happens to the gauge??does it still show hot????if yes wire is earthing down.or gauge is not happy with life, :dontknow: if it goes down sender is at fault or you changing wrong sender :wink:  :dontknow:

it goes stright down if i unplug it the fuse box w swopd it with today wasnt the same one but it was from a mk1 and everything fitted stright in and startd first time this is sender number 5 and its a vw one?

have flushed to coolent system, replaced it with new coolent

have you cheaked what thermostat you have in as there is 2 sorts that open at differnent temps

if you have a higer temp on then it will run hotter

on will the new fusebox be ok as it wasnt exactly the same but seems to be working fine

still the same mate 3/4 way up after 5/10 mins

what is the actual temp? do you have an infra red thermometer to check?  Have you replaced rad cap?

no and yes the fusebox diff is only a lil bit just abit of plasic diff

not sure how yours is wired up, but wen mine was over heating i played around with sensers for god knos how long. but along the way some1 had took a feed from the oil temp sensor for the water sensor, mayb you got the same problem? remove the wire from on top off the oil filter housing, has a little spade fitting. then check the gauge. im not sure about this but give it a thought. mite just b my car.

tryd that mate just the oil temp went to zero also put a new expansion bottle and cap and still no change can sum body help?

right checkd all wirein also took dials out is the earth wire in the white plug that plugs into the back of the dials?if so that was ok also flushd coolent out and made sure no airlock also when i was putin my dash back the green light for the indicators was on faint and the indicators themselfs wasnt workin until i startd the engine then the light went out and the indicators workd!what would of that been
