Overheating fixed (?)
a new thermo switch has been fitted and all works ok, fan cuts in and out and does'nt boil over.
the gauge does sit very close to the the top end of the scale though when at idle and about 3/4 when driving along.
all those with a rad with a built in expension tank where does your gauge sit?

After the warming up period my temp gauge sits about a quarter from the cold or 3 quarters back from the red, my oil temp on average is about 70.
Timing can effect the temp of water and oil.

my timing isn't perfect as i've only done it by ear, will get it timed correctly when its MOT'd.

My water guage temp sits just over halfway once up to normal temp (just past the led in the guage). My oil temp seems to be around the high 90's to low 100's once up to normal temp.
Weirdly though the oil temp jumps 10 degrees higher though when the lights are switched on :roll: . Dodgy electrical connection there somewhere I think.
Fan seems to cut in when it should and keeps things cool though so not unduly worried.
Oil temp has been as high as 110 in heavy stop start traffic…. My old Mk2 16 valver used to reach 125 sometimes though 8O, so not unduly worried.

Mines the same - water about half way or just above, although as soon as the water goes down even a small amount the gauge does rise to three quarters, so I keep it well topped up.
The oil is high 90's to low 100's too, except in heavey traffic.
One problem (I think) is that the water gets to this temperature VERY quick, with 4-5 mins stood still my fan will be cutting in!!! Any ideas? I'm sure it should take about 15-20mins before the fan cuts in when the car is stood still, especially in this weather!

Both my cars took about 5mins sitting for the temp to cause the fan to kick in.
Talking to others I think that's the way it is. They just run hot.
I swapped temp senders and that changed where the gauge sits. I don't think it's an exact science.
Getting the timing done properly made the most difference.
I was reading about an article about oil coolers in Golf+ and it said the oil cooler in a mk1 is thermostatically controlled, is that right?

My fan also kicks in within 4-5 mins even in the winter. My oil temp usually sits between 85 and 92 when driving and only gets to 100 when sitting in traffic. My water temp gauge sits just below midway unless in traffic (where it climbs) or on the motorway (where its drops).
Heard that these gauges aren't that accurate or reliable and that you can only really use them as a guide to whether the temnp is going up/down or staying stable?

hmm, i don't think i'll worry about it . i will get timed up when its at the garage, so we'll see if it makes a difference.
as i said the fan kicks in and out and it doesn't over heat so will leave it.
