Oil temp very high after restoration!!

Post

Hi
As some of you will know I have just about completed a full restoration of a 1983 MK1 Golf GTi.

I have had quite a few problems, mainly with electrics whilst trying to get it finished. The likes of rub-jonny have been fabulous as usual and I am very grateful!!

This afternoon I decided to run it whilst on stands to see how it goes. After 10-15 minutes of it running the oil temperature starts getting too hot. The needle travels to the right (hot) and the MFA digital reading goes up and up. After 10-15 mins the oil temp reaches 100 and the light starts flashing. I let it carry on running earlier for circa another 15 minutes as it took this long for the coolant temp to raise to the point that the fans cut in.

At this point the MFA read 170!!

I touched the oil cooler and it did not feel hot which I thought it would do if the pump was pumping correctly?

I understand that the MFA reading is taken from the oil filter housing and the needle temp from somewhere else. The fact that they both read very high would make it sound like there def is a problem.

I must say that although the oil temp was high the engine sounded good with no issues.

Please help!!

Cheers

I'm so fabulous!

if it really got to 170 oil temp I'd expect a blown gasket and warped head, so I'm thinking its a sensor or wiring fault :)

check the wiring to your temp sensors, you should have a red/yellow which is dash temp to a small black single pin sensor in the front or side flange, the oil temp is a small white sensor in the oil filter housing which is green/black.  also look on the side of the head for a brown/white wire with a ring terminal, this is for the dash :)

Hi Mate
Thanks again.

I have been having a look this morning but not really getting anywhere tbh.

I have the red/yellow to the coolant sensor and the green/black to the oil temp sensor.

On the side of the block I have a solid yellow wire for the oil pressure switch and an earth to the corner of the rocker cover. This earth branches out of the main loom wiring.

I can not get the engine temp gauge to work.

I have tried running an earth wire from both the sensors (brown/yellow) and (green/black) and each time the OIL TEMP needle go to the very hot end of the scale but the engine temp needle does not move…..

When I turn the ignition on the engine temp needle does flick ever so slightly but does not move any further??

Cheers in advance

have you tried just earthign the red/yellow? if the gauge still wont move then there is a wiring fault or the clocks are faulty. the level warnign light is controlled by a relay above the fusebox #42 or 43, this has a connection to the dash temp wire so have a look here for damage. sometimes the relay temp wire is yellow/blue, sometimes red/yellow just fyi

Hi
Yes I earthed the red/yellow and the oil temp needle goes to hot…..

Exactly the same happens when I earth the green black on the oil filter housing……

The oil temp is getting 2 supplies! lol

There is def a wiring prob somewhere!!!
