There isn't a breather on the back of the GTI engine, it could just be the rocker cover gasket leaking. You'll have to have a good look to see where its coming from, if its really coming out fast then it could be the camshaft oil seal or a core plug leaking.

It all depends on what you find. The rocker cover gasket will be most likely and easiest to change.

There are 2 types of gasket so make sure you get the right one. The original on your car will be a cork one but it could have been changed to a rubber one at some point which means that the studs in the top of the head will have been replaced with a slightly different type, this means the cork one will no longer fit.

On big block engines the breather is part of the cam cover, on the right with a rubber pipe going to the intake system. These are renown for becoming blocked with gunge/tar. Then the engine pressurises and blows oil out off every orifice it can find.

Make sure the studs are tight in the head, also.  I had a "mysterious" oil leak because I had backed one of those out about 3/4 of a turn, without realizing it.  That part of the gasket just never sealed tightly.

I burnt mine out! Very impressive :D  :D

But then it was full of ash

So I chiesled the thing open from inside, drilled out the spot welds holding the mesh togther, cleaned up and re-weld it all back togther.

You could try soaking in petrol/solvent or if you want an easy life most people buy new ones, (complete cam covers)

I cleaned my breather with an old toothbrush and some cheap degreaser (basically paraffin). The gunge in mine had the consistency of tar and took aaaaaaaaages to shift, but it did eventually.

The advantage of a toothbrush is that you can poke it in through the breather exit and shift the gunge from the inside. (the angled head ones with the pointy out bristles are best   - but make sure that the toothbrush is genuinely surplus to requirements….   )

If you're planning to do this, I'd also recommend investing in a cheap plastic wash basin to catch all the crud that comes out. Otherwise you'll change the colour of wherever you're working to a deep chocolate brown colour.

Bear in mind that the mesh doesn't need to be completely clear for the breather to do its job.
