There are 2 types of gasket so make sure you get the right one. The original on your car will be a cork one but it could have been changed to a rubber one at some point which means that the studs in the top of the head will have been replaced with a slightly different type, this means the cork one will no longer fit.

But then it was full of ash
So I chiesled the thing open from inside, drilled out the spot welds holding the mesh togther, cleaned up and re-weld it all back togther.
You could try soaking in petrol/solvent or if you want an easy life most people buy new ones, (complete cam covers)

The advantage of a toothbrush is that you can poke it in through the breather exit and shift the gunge from the inside. (the angled head ones with the pointy out bristles are best - but make sure that the toothbrush is genuinely surplus to requirements…. )
If you're planning to do this, I'd also recommend investing in a cheap plastic wash basin to catch all the crud that comes out. Otherwise you'll change the colour of wherever you're working to a deep chocolate brown colour.
Bear in mind that the mesh doesn't need to be completely clear for the breather to do its job.
