Oil pump

To go with my ongoing oil warning buzzer problem, my tappets have recently become very noisey, im going to replace my oil pump and sump as a precaution.

Can anyone tell me if the 16v oil pump is a direct replacement or am i just aswell sticking with an 8v pump?

Thanks in advance

no 16v pump is completly different. 16v has a splined end and 8v has a notched end. this is becasue 16v doesnt have a block mounted dizzy.

Thinking about replacing my tappets and shims aswell, can these be bought from GSF (i didnt ask on the phone), or where is the best place to purchase them from?

Do you remember the GSF part number for the oil pump?

It'll work with any engine code right? Mine's a DX.

?60 sounds like a good investment to me…

My oil pump from GSF was ?35 plus ?8 carriage. I did get a little bit of discount cos i work at a VW garage however.

Im about to fit my new pump tonight and i was considering doing an oil flush before the new pump and oil go in. Would anyone recommend this?

Ive been told its a good idea by some people and other people are telling me not to bother.

Ive been advised that since its an old engine it may have small cracks inside the block but these have been filled up with carbon deposits etc. If i carry out an engine flush, it may dislodge all this gunk and cos more problems that it may fix….. Does this sound about right?

Should i go ahead and do the flush?

dont bother flushing, just start using a good quality oil and change it every 3 months / 3k miles as this will gradualy clean the engine with out removing carbon etc which maybe keeping seals in place etc, you could always try what the guys on clubgti do which is drop 1 litre of oil out and add back in 1 litre of ATF fluid and run that for a week / 200-300 miles as they seem to like this for cleaning out the engine a bit and restoring the hydro tappets….

other thing to do is make sure the rocker cover and breather pipes are clean, so take the rocker cover off and clean out any gunky / burnt on pap.

on the tappets front unless you have a hydro ones then they will be noisly as they will need re-shimming… see the HOW TO section at the bottom of the forum for a guide on how to do this  :)  its not hard all.

I just checked GSF and it says it's ?29.50 for a new GTI oil pump. That's not bad at all me thinks. Converted thats about BND $70. Not bad at all…..

Not sure if it's the right one you're referring to tho. The GSF part number is 15316. Are u sure u paid ?35 and not less? or was it an oil cooler that u bought?

Sorry must have been ?35 inc postage (minus discount)

Fitted my oil pump last night and made no bloody difference  :banghead:
I still have my oil pressure warning light coming on at 2500 revs, and my tappets are still chapping away.

Also fitted a new ignition switch as the one i purchased a month ago has starting sticking already. That didnt make a difference either!! Someone has mentioned that i may have play in my ignition barrel, would this sound right?

Since i refitted my steering wheel, my horn now sounds when i turn the wheel. Strange thing is, my horn hasnt sounded for about as year  :dontknow:

So next on the list is a new set of tappets and shims, the "L" circuit repair behind the speedo, and check wiring for horn

The joys of old cars eh

I'd pull the sump back off and check the big end shells, sounds like you could have a bit of wear there.

Thanks for the advice mate. What exactly am i looking for when checking the big end shells?

How easy are they to replace and what kind of cost should i be looking at?

check the column housing is all the way on, sounds like the slip ring is earthing on the screw heads.  if its never worked before check the earth from the rack to the chassis.

as for oil light, did you prime the oil pump before you fitted it?
