oil pressure

I have a 1990 1.8 gti cabrio ( dx i think). The oil pressure light came on along with an annoying buzzing. The light will flash from when i turn the ignition and the buzzing starts from 2000+ revs. Would I be right in thinking this would indicate low oil pressure? Another thing is i recently changed the rocker cover gasket so maybe did some of the rotten old gasket get in somewhere? Thanks in advance for the help.

it quite possibly would, when was the oil changed? and what oil was used? could be its too thin…

best way to tell is to get a oil pressure gauge and plub it in, use a T piece and use the head take off point for the low pressure buzzer as this will give the worse case and measure the lowest pressure in the system.

some one else asked this a day or so ago.. have a look a few posts down as I replied to that one too.

edie - there ya go… http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=72618

Thanks for the reply.Oil definately not too thin. 10w40 oil used maybe 2000 miles ago. Could you describe where to messure the pressure from?

on the right hand side of the head there is a sensor with a wire attached, this is where to measure the pressure, refit the old pressure sensor too with a T piece

Sounds like a good place to start. So if pressure is low, flush and change oil? If the pressure is ok its electrical? Thanks again for the help, saves me arsing about for a few hours!!

if pressure is low then poss an oil change, if the engines got shed loads of miles on it maybe time to use 15-40,

the other options are the pump pick up maybe blocked, so drop the sump and check, clean the gauze if needed.

pump maybe worn, a new pump is only ?36 from gsf, so worth a punt, iirc later 36mm pumps from the 16v mk3s etc fit and give better flow, so could help things along

also the engine maybe just old and tired, with the main bearing shells being a bit past their best, this can lead to low pressure,

butu the first thing to do is check the pressure then go from there.
