oil pressure warning light

Brain picking time

The golf has developed a little shall we say 'quirk'!

When the golf dips to idle (850 rpm) the oil pressure warning light comes on and flash irratically.
It only does it at idle. when driving its fine and on the motorway to and from inters it was outstanding!

A friend suggested that i remove the sump and gauze and clean them out properly as they get full of gunk, causing the oil pump to struggle! apparently a mutual friend had a similar problem and this was the fix it.

just wondering if there was any other ideas :dontknow:

MOT due on 3rd July!

Dont wanna drive it really so unless fixed it means no Summer Festival! :banghead:

I would be advised you to fit an oil pressure guage , you can then be 100% certain what is going on . Are you using a nice thick quailty oil ? 20/50 ?

850 is a little low, try raising it up a tad. thin oil wont help, when was the last change and what oil did you fit?  could be a real low oil pressure situation though, on my old MK2 I fitted a 'rebuilt and ported head' which was actually a lump of scrap. cam cap bearings were fecked and this rtesulted in low oil pressure at the head when hot.

to check this, measure the pressure at the head, and then at the filter housing. if low at head but healthy at filter housing its worn cam caps, if low in both places then its too thin oil, weak pump or blocked pickup.
