Oil pressure light flickers!

The oil light on my 1983 1800GTi flickers??? Its never on permanent but flickers on for a split second every now and again. (seems to happen more on overun for some reason?) Has anyone ever experienced this? does anyone know if it's likely to be due to low oil pressure (I have no pressure gauge, i think i'd better get one!) or does it sound more like a poor connection to the pressure switch or a dodgy switch itself? Any help or comments will be greatly appreciated.

Mine flickers all the time, I think it's down to a bad earth somewhere, the oil pressure etc is fine.

The oil light in my GX has been on for 4 years!
Still goes well, the water temp warning light feels left out and occasionally joins in and flashes for a while then goes dormant again for a few months
Oh well,never let me down

Thanks guys! I was hopin someone would say something along those lines, hopefully i'm looking at a bad connection and not dodgy oil pressure. I've gotta get a gauge fitted so i can actually see whats going on!

today I fitted my console gauges, and when I connected the twin pole sender in the head my oil pressure light started to flicker constantly.
Oil pressure is good, according to the gauge. So I fitted my old single sender again and no more flickering light, and no more reading on my extra gauge either
I ordered a new twin pole sender and hopefully that should solve the problem.

Hi,

Does anybody know at what pressure the warning buzzer comes on at, I'm getting a faint buzz for a few mins after start-up although the pressure gauge looks healthy, reads 80+ psi, the gauge only goes up to 100 so figure this is ok, so is it likely a sender or earthing fault?

Does the type of oil make a difference? It's a 2.0 G60 using syntha silver.

Cheers, Derek

The light/buzzer activates if the revs go over 2200 and the pressure is still below 1.8bar at the oil filter sender, or below 0.3 bar at the head sender. However, the light/buzzer circuit is infamous for giving false readings, and the senders themselves get old and inaccurate over the years, with all the heating and cooling cycles… (yours may be newer, if they are the G60 ones - you might also check if they are the right spec for the light/buzzer circuit!)

That oil is fine - the thickness, or thin-ness of an oil only comes into the picture when the engine is very worn, assuming that it is the recommended oil for that engine in the first place, which it is, in your case.

I had a very similar problem afew weeks ago. the oil warning light would flicker on every so often. the wire to the pressure switch on the side of the engine was really rather old and brittle,so i replaced that along with the earth strap connected to the rocker cover.so far so good although im going to get an oil pressure guage just to be on the safe side.

fitted my new twin pole sender today, and no more flickering oil light!
Expensive part, but now I also a working gauge again.
When started cold I have 5 bars pressure, and after a 60km blast I get 2 bars on idle. Thats ok?

Also fitted a new radiator today, damn everything seems to break down lately :banghead:

No problem, the oil pressure goes down as the oil gets thinner as it warms up.
VAG minimum pressure is 2bar at 2000 revs at 80 deg C, so 2bar at idle is fine…
