Oil Light at speed

I've had the usual oil ight coming on while the engine is cold for a long time now. It goes off once the engine is warm. But it started flickering while on the motorway last ngiht. Was only a few tiny flickers, it didn't light up fully. I slowed down a bit and it was fine.

I'm not sure whether to start worrying about this. What do people think?

The last few time I topped the oil up I used part synthetic. Not sure if this could have anything to do with it?

Any ideas?

Cheers

did you check the oil level or temp if you have a gauge?
give her a good oil and filter change and check the connections are good on the oil pressure and temp sensors. then see how it is.

the obvious solutions are not often so.

Fit a guage

Cheers guys.

All the conections look good. The sensors are quite new as well. Gonna do an oil change anyway and see how it goes.

Was thinking about fitting a set of VDO gauges. Anyone know how easy they are to sort out?

I've had a very similar issue recently. I would start by changing the pressure switch on the RHS of the head. It worked for me  :)

Me too… Dont suppose you have the part number for the oil pressure sensor / photo do you… called in at GSF Liverpool today, the guy said there are a few different parts, non e of which give the engine cc or codes? He said i would need the part number.

Quick, simple diagnosis of Dynamic Oil Pressure Warning System by symptom.

Assuming your engine has oil and hasn't yet started knocking, most likely causes of oil lights/buzzers are in the warning system itself.

1) 2 seconds after 2000 RPM or more, light and buzzer come on, replace the high pressure switch.

2) Oil warning light on at idle, especially when hot, replace the low pressure switch.

3) No oil light blinking with key on, engine off, replace low pressure switch and/or repair light in instrument cluster.

4) If these quick tips fail to address oil warning light/buzzer issues, do not pass go, head immediately to your nearby mechanical oil pressure gauge store and buy a gauge. Buy or make a 10 x 1.0 mm threaded adapter. Test your oil pressure, cold and hot. Know what you are looking at.

Number 1 is exactly what happens.  Dont suppose you know the part number GSF dont seem to know?

Dont worry about the part number I ve removed it and will take it to GSF. Im a little worried though, it looks new.

The one that goes in the head is brown and the one that goes in by the oil filter is white. If I remember rightly.

Both mine have black plastic between the nut and the electrical connection. The high pressure one (on oil filter) looks new. I presume that if a high pressure where fitted in the low pressure and vice versa it would cause a fault. How do they work (in simple terms) ?

Problem now fixed… High pressure sensor, ?2.75 from GSF… See Chud's diagram earlier in this post for location of sensors. If it souns above 2,000 rpm relace high pressure sensor on top of oil filter, the sensor is white in colour, mine had a black one.
Oh the joy of driving the MK1 without the horrific sound of the oil buzzer!
