Oil filter housing gaskets 1.8DX

Post

I’m going to replace the gasket between the housing and the block and the O ring inside the oil cooler.  Is it as simple as removing filter undoing the 1” nut remove pipe and cooler replace O ring then undo the 3 Allen key bolts on block to remove housing to change gasket. Then rebuild with fresh oil. ( will try saving coolant as that’s fresh)

Hose Pinch pliers to clamp the coolant lines then disconnect them reduces the loss of coolant.  But I have taken them down with out disconnecting them the easiest way was to loosen the nut holding the cooler on.
Take it to the extreme bottom but not off, then use a pair of Vice-Grips to hold the nut fast to the inner pipe, and remove the Pipe. You place one jaw inside the pipe, and the other jaw on the nuts side.

The two halves will separate and you can pull the old out and the new in then retighten the pipe to the flange through the cooler, then be sure that the o-ring centers and tighten (This is where the o-rings with the little ears that hold it in place come in handy.).

Be wary of the "T" hose as if it is old it can go bad….with the movement.

Thanks will try that. the pipes should be fine as they are only a year old. I’m using a genuine VW O ring so probably be a normal one .  I’m fairly mechanically minded so hopefully will be straight forward just worried about the 3 Allen key bolts as they must get a lot of heat. As long as they don’t snap.
A garage want £100 to do the job. At the moment they only time I have used a garage on this is to set up the k-jet, I prefers to get my own hands dirty

When I changed my O ring above the oil cooler I did not need to undo or remove the coolant hoses, there was enough movement in them to slide the oil cooler off and refit a new O ring.

Its a large nut holding the cooler on, something like 30mm or 32mm I think but it was a few years ago when I changed my O ring….

There are no "Allen Bolts to remove".
Spin off the filter, then a 27 or 28mm Deepwell socket
Pair of Vice-Grips.

Just soak those Allens in Kroil, Pb-blaster.  Then be sure that the heads of your Allens are clean of debris and fully seat the allen tool in to the head.

A small tap of the tool with a hammer and they should come out fine
